Picture Proof of STS Success!!!

If we really believe that skin-to-skin is the best place for babies to stay warm, decrease stress hormones, enhance brain development, maintain blood glucose levels and more, then why wouldn’t we place all babies there, especially the ones who were born via cesarean. In April, we decided to try it.  (http://wp.me/p24q0t-6j)  Two months later, we have had many positive experiences! Patients have written glowing comments on their surveys, and we have learned that even when we think we are doing our best, we can push to do even better! Thanks to all the nurses, doctors, moms, dads and babies who forged the way to make Memorial Hospital an even better place to have a baby!

  1. Really great to see these pictures. Do you have a policy or protocol? We are in process of writing one and starting this ourselves. It would be very helpful to see yours, if possible.

    • No policy. What was written in the blog about it in April was the exact instructions given to nurses. Glad you enjoyed the pictures! Would love to see your policy when it is completed!

I think the best thing about these pictures and STS in the OR is the smile on the faces of the parents! Patients are scared when they are going into the “operating room”. This is a little bit of normalcy for the family during a very frightening time. We know it might not work for every situation but with a little extra effort on behalf of the nurses, we are making an incredible impact! Way go go CBU nurses!

    WONDERFUL!

  4. Marie says:

Oh, wow! I want this experience!

  5. Sarah says:

I agree with Patty. The smiles on these parents faces speaks for the experience! Great job CBU!!

  6. Laura Mabry CNM says:

Durign my second experience with STS in the OR I had the joy of seeing the baby self-latch and nurse vigourously during surgery! It was amazing….

  7. Ashley says:

The smiles on the parents faces are priceless! STS in the OR has been nothing but a positive experience for all!

  8. Elizabeth Smith says:

We did the same thing at my hospital last April. I went in for the first trial having never done it before. I was introduced by the nurse manager as the “expert” I was sweating bullets not really knowing how it was going to work. They handed over the baby and I just put him on his mama and told the dad to watch the airway and keep a hand on him. It was great. I went in on 10 sections and now the nurses are on their own.
